10 Year anniversary Dinner raises £10,000
On the 10th anniversary of the tragic death of Louise Gergel, we held a commemorative fund raising dinner. The dinner was a tremendous success as a fundraising event as well as a most enjoyable evening, although tinged with sad memories for many.
Dr John Wolffe - Louise’s father and a trustee of the Hughes Syndrome Foundation introduced the evening, including reading a letter from Professor Graham Hughes.
This was followed by a most interesting speech from Dr Khamashta, the head of research at St Thomas’ Hospital’s Louise Coote Lupus unit, in which he described some of the key aspects of Hughes Syndrome and provided interesting statistics on its prevalence.

Max Gergel - Louise’s son and Claire Saffer - her sister, gave a personal and emotional account of the impact of Louise’s death on their lives and how the work of the Fellowship and awareness of Hughes Syndrome has directly helped people in the room to be able to have their own children.

Reception at no.11 Downing Street
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, MP, kindly hosted a reception at number 11 Downing Street for the Louise Gergel Fellowship, to mark the 10th anniversary of the tragic death of Louise. Many of the Foundations major supporters attended the event and we thank them for their kind generosity over the years which has allowed us to support research into Hughes Syndrome and to help raise awareness.
Louise’s sister Anna Petrook introduced the Chancellor and spoke eloquently of her personal experiences. The Chancellor expressed his support for the charity and for the work of the Hughes Syndrome Foundation. Professor Hughes then described some of the key features of Hughes Syndrome and how many people’s lives were being helped by the work of the Louise Gergel research Fellow, the team at St. Thomas’ Hospital and many other medical practitioners around the world.
Professor Hughes explaining to the chancellor how a simple £3 blood test could improve medical care and potentially save the National Health money by avoiding mis-diagnosis of “sticky blood”.

Listen to the speeches:
